This is the Brooklyn Brewery’s facility in Brooklyn, New York, where they make their Brewmasters Reserves and bottled conditioned beers. However, most of their brewing is contracted brewed by the F.X. Matt Brewing Company in Utica, New York. The Brooklyn Brewery was founded in 1988. They make great beer! I am one of their fans.

C’est l’installation de Brooklyn Brewery à Brooklyn, New York, où ils font leur Brewmasters Reserves et leur bouteilles de bières conditionées. It is located in an industrial area. Most of the neighborhood is residential. When this facility opened up heroin, crack, guns and the mafia plagued the neighborhood. However, today it is much nicer. The brewery recently bought some of the adjacent property and expanded. For more of their history click here.

I had the Mary’s Maple Porter (made with maple syrup), East India Pale Ale (very hoppy) and Blast (an imperial India pale ale that’s 9% alcohol).

J’ai dégusté le Mary’s Maple Porter (faite avec du sirop d’éable), East India Pale Ale (très houblonée) et Blast (une imperial India pale ale avec 9% d’alcool).

On Friday I visited the National September 11th Memorial. There is alot of construction going on in the area. It is necessary to get a pass before visiting. I got mine at www.911memorial.org. Admission is free. All visitors and baggage go through a security screening.

There are two massive pools set within the original footprints of the Twin Towers with waterfalls going down their sides. The names of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks on New York, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania, and in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, are inscribed in bronze around the edges of the waterfalls.

The 9/11 Memorial Museum is not open yet but it will open sometime this year. It will display artifacts associated with the events of that day as well as intimate stories of loss, compassion, reckoning and recovery.

Ce vendredi dernier j’ai visité le Mémorial Nationale de 11 Septembre. Il y a beaucoup de travaux en cours dans la région. Il est nécessaire d’obtenir un laissez-passer avant de visiter. J’ai obtenu lemiens à www.911memorial.org. L’entrée est gratuite. Tous les visiteurs et les bagages passent par un contrôle de sécurité.

Il y a deux étendues d’eau massives fixées dans les empreintes originales des Tours Jumelles avec des cascades qui descendent de leurs côtés. Ellis Island

Ellis Island was the main point of entry for immigrants entering the United States from 1892 to 1924. 12,000,000 immigrants went through there. 2% were rejected and had to return to their homeland. Reasons for being rejected included having a chronic contagious disease, criminal background, insanity and “likely to become a public charge.”

When immigrants arrived they were often exhausted from the long ocean voyage. The boats were often crowded and uncomfortable. They were anxious about what lay ahead as they went to start a new life in a new country. Their first glimpse of the United States was New York Harbor. They saw the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. For many of them this was very different from anything they had ever seen before. During World War II about 7,000 Germans, Italians and Japanese were detained there. Ellis Island était le point principal d’entrée pour les immigrés qui entraient aux États-Unis de 1892 à 1924. 12,000,000 immigrés ont passé par là. 2% ont été rejetées et ont dû retourner dans leur patrie. Les raisons pour être rejeté incluaient ayant une maladie chronique contagieuse, des antécédents criminaux, l’insanité et “probable à devenir une charge publique.” Lorsque les immigrés sont arrivés, ils étaient souvent épuisés par le voyage long. Les bateaux étaient souvent bondés et inconfortables. Ils étaient inquiet de ce qui les attendait dès qu’ils sont allés à commencer une nouvelle vie dans un nouveau pays. Leur premier aperçu des États-Unis était le Port de New York. Ils ont vu le Statue de la Liberté et l’horizon de Manhattan. The Immigration Museum has alot of interesting exhibits. One can easily spend alot of time there. I did not take any pictures inside because it was crowded.

The Statue of Liberty

Yesterday was a very mild winter day. It was 45°F. I went to Battery Park in Manhattan and took the ferry to Liberty Island then to Ellis Island. There was no line for the ferry. However, the ferry was crowded. Often there is a long line and alot of waiting. The ferry cost $13. More ferry information is available at www.statuecruises.com. The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French people to the American people. It was financed by private donations. The idea was conceived in Paris in 1865. It was meant as a monument to liberty and as a gift for the centennial celebration of the United States. Hier était une journée d’hiver très douce. Il faisait 8° C. Je suis allé à Battery Park à Manhattan pour prendre le ferry pour Liberty Island, puis à Ellis Island. Il n’y avait pas de queue pour le ferry. Toutefois, le ferry était bondé. Souvent il y a une queue longue et beaucoup d’attente. Le ferry coute $13. Il y a plus d’informations pour le ferry à www.statuecruises.com. La Statue de Liberté était un cadeau du peuple français au peuple américain. C’était finançai par des contributions privées. L’idée était conçu à Paris en 1865. C’était un monument à la liberté et aussi un cadeau pour le centennaire des États-Unis.

The Roosevelt Island Tramway

The tramway crosses the East River from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island. It runs along the Queensboro Bridge. The ride takes about 3 1/2 minutes. The views are spectacular. It costs $2.50 each way. Le téléphérique traverse la Rivière Est de Manhattan à Roosevelt Island. Il longe le pont Queensboro Bridge. Le trajet dure environ 3 1/2 minutes. Les vues sont spectaculaires. Ça coute $2.50 par trajet.

Starting in Manhattan on 60th Street and 2nd Avenue...Commençant à Manhattan sur la 60me rue et la 2me Avenue.
